CALCUTTA: Five persons were killed and 34 others injured, many critically, when a powerful bomb exploded inside a bus at Midnapore town on Monday evening, the state’s deputy inspector-general of police (HQ), S.I.S Ahmed, told PTI here,

While three persons died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injures in hospital, Ahmed sad.

The incident occurred when the bus arrived at the Jagannaih temple bus stand. The bomb, suspected to have been planted in the bus, blew off, resulting in the casualties, the DIG said.

The bus was badly damaged.

All the injured were rushed to hospital.

Senior police and district officials went to the spot and supervised rescue operations. Police cordoned off the area as investigations began, Ahmed added.

HYDERABAD: Nine people were killed and many injured 22 of them severely, when an express train ran into a tram at the station on the Guntur-Mir Yalaguda section of the south central rail- way (SCR) in Andhwa Pradesh Carty Saturday.

Railway sources said several trains were either cancelled or diverted after nine coaches of the Narsapur-Hyderabad Express derailed when it hit a goods train around 1 a.m.
