LUCKNOW: If a symbolic demonstration, 101 people, including several leaders of the Muslim community, courted arrest here Saturday to protect against the BJP governments “illegal and unconstitutional” steps for constructing the Ram Temple at the disputed site in the Ayodhya.
Raising anti-BJP slogans and carrying placards, the protesters marched in procession from Darul Shafa to Vidhan Bhavan. One oread, na kalank lagaoRam ko, Ayodhya ko na na yudh sthal banao” (Do not put a scar on the name of Ram by converting Ayodhya into a battle-field),
Prominent among those who courted arrest were, Ibrahim Sulaiman Sait, Sultan Salahuddin Oyaisi, and Syed Shabuddin, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, Saifuddin Soz, Maulana Syed Ahmed Hashmi, Maulana Muzaffar Hussain, and Hira Lal Yadav, president of the Luck now unit of the Samajwadi Janata Party.
The protesters were led by Akshya Brahmachari, who had hit the headlines protesting against the installation of the idols at the disputed site in 1950.
