NEW DELHLI ;India’s prime minister RV Narasimha Rao, Monday said a meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) would be convened to discuss the Ayodhya dispute immediately after it was reconstituted.
Talking to reporters at the airport here before leaving for Harare to attend the common wealth heads of government (CHOGM), the prime minister said the process to re constitute the council was in progress.
The dispute over the Babri Mosque, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where fundamental Hindus claim was the birth place of Lord Rama, has seen the toppling of the previous govt headed by V P Singh. Religious groups, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, want the mosque to be demolished and temple re-instated.
“A meeting of the NIC will be convened immediately after it is reconstituted,” Rao said.
