AMRITSAR: The Association for Democratic Rights (AFDR) last week indicted Majitha police for the death of Ajit Singh of village Kotla Gujran. Ajit Singh was allegedly tortured by police on July 12 and had subsequently died on August 1. An inquiry committee consti4Gsted by AFDR to probe the Incident stated that the latter was tortured by police in the village on July 12 and he had become unconscious. He was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital Amritsar, where he died. Bhupinder Singh, press secretary of AFDR, in a release said that the inquiry team constituted Dr. Parminder Singh, Yashpal Jhabal and Bhupinder Singh Sandhu. The committee had met with the wife and son of Ajit Singh, other residents of village, SP (Detective) and pursued the postmortem report and other relevant documents. The AEDR report alleged that Ajit Singh was dragged in the streets and beaten up by police causing multiple abrasions on his body. When he was brought back to his house he was unconscious and not able to even take water. The police allegedly took this extreme step to know the whereabouts of Kulwant Singh. Ajit’s son, who is wanted in a case registered under Section 307. Kulwant was earlier booked under Section 323, in which he was on bail. But the case was later converted into Section 307, in which his bail was cancelled. According to the postmortem report, the cause of death was spectoclmic shock which is the result of pus in large sized bedsores and early development of gangrene in the right foot. The report observed that the very appearance of these infections showed that the disease is certainly the result of Ajit Singh remaining bedridden. It said sores occur only when a person is unable to move.
