The PM Deve Gowda’s order to the Uttar Pradesh government to clear at least 50% of the Rs 900 crore dues of sugarcane farmers within one month is unlikely to provide relief to sugarcane farmers. As most of the sugar mills in the state are facing huge losses it would be difficult for them to clear dues. Also the state government is facing severe financial crunch, and has approached the Center for a grant of Rs 15,000 crore.
