FARIDKOT: The Punjab government has decided to revive the system of joint touring by both the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP in the areas falling under their jurisdiction. This was announced by O.P. Sharma. DGP, Punjab, while addressing media persons here last week, Earlier, at a meeting with panches and sarpanches of Kotkapura block last week, the DGP said there was no need to continue “thikri pehras” (night patrolling) in the rural areas by villagers as the law and order situation was well under control and there was absolutely no scope of the revival of militancy.
Sharma said he had no knowledge about the disappearance under mysterious circumstances of hijacker Kanwaljit Singh Sandhu, who had been released on parole by the Supreme Court about a month ago and whose body was found last week. The DGP directed the district police chief concerned to verify the facts and report the matter to him. The DGP said the officials of the respective slates were determined to check interstate crime and unlawful activities on the Indo Pak border and also to prevent militants from reorganizing. The DGP also flagged off a 20member motorcycle squad al the Faridkot police headquarters in the morning. The squad has been constituted for 10hour patrolling. Similar motorcycle squads are being set up in Kotkapura and Jaitu. Addressing the sarpanches, the DGP assured that the police will definitely honor the settlement of the disputes made at the instance of panchayats and in this respect the necessary instructions are being issued to all the SSPs in the State.
