New Delhi: The Congress overture to the Left for a joint campaign against communalism on Dec.11 drew a blank with CPI leaders telling the Congress emissaries to first activate own huge base on the issue.

They are also told by the CPI leaders that if any joint campaign for the defence of secularism 1s considered in the future the Participation of “all” secular parties was necessary.

By this they implied the Janata Dal and its National Front allies as well as the Samajwadi Party led by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yaday who attended the Left’s anti communal convention in Lucknow recently.

CPI (M) General Secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet said no proposal had come yet from the Congress to his party about joint campaigns.

“They know better than that to come to us with proposals” Surjeet said adding that his party too felt” that the Congress should launch its own programs to prove its Credentials before asking the Left to join in the fight.

The Congress representatives who called on the CPI leaders at their headquarters at Ajoy Bhavan here included AICC General Secretary Nawal Kishore Sharma and former General Secretary K.N.Singh. They held discussions with CPI General Secretary Indrajit Gupta and National Council Secretaries M.Farooqi and Chaturanan Mishra.
