NEW DELHI (PTI): India’s lower house of Parliament the Lok Sabha was adjourned Dec.9 tll Dec. 16 following unruly scenes in the house.
In an unusual move the house was adjourned for a week during mid-session to meet again next Wednesday.
Amidst constant barracking by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members the speaker Shivraj V.Patil managed to read out an appeal for communal amity and peace after describing Dec.6 demolition of the disputed mosque at Ayodhya as “unacceptable.”
The house witnessed noisy and angry exchanges between the BJP and the Congress (I) members as Patil announced a recommendation of the business advisory committee for adjourning the house till Dec.16 to enable members to go to their constituencies.
While the BJP members insisted in their leader Atal Behari Vajpayee being allowed to have his say first the ruling party members strongly objected to Vajpayee taking the floor.
The two sides traded charges and backbenchers from both the sides rushed to the well. Party whips had a difficult time restraining them.
The destruction of the mosque has arrayed all shades of political opinion against the BJP although the opposition has also demanded the resignation prime minister P.V.Narasimha Rao.
