SRINAGAR: The Indian authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of Srinagar, Bijbehara and Anantnag towns of south Kashmir to thwart the all-party Hurriyat conference call for amass March to the Hazratbal shrine while the siege of the shrine continued last week A 10,000 strong procession was taken out in north Kashmir township of Sopore. The slogan shouting processionist dispersed peacefully at Mazar E Shoda, official reports said.

In the district town of Baramulla, another massive demonstration was held but the people prevented by the paramilitary forces at the local bridge. They dispersed peacefully after raising slogans against the siege of the Hazratbal shrine.

No Friday prayer could be offered in Jamia Masjid, the grand mosque of the summer capital of Srinagar, for the fourth consecutive Friday in view of curfew restrictions and extra ordinary army bandobast Similar was the case at Anantnag Jamia Masjid and Biji behara Jamia Masjid, where army was out in force.

Police and paramilitary forces lobbed tear gas shells and lathi charged groups of people who wanted to take out procession at Rambagh in Srinagar, however, no one was injured, officials said.

People who assembled at’ Dal gate and Buchwara pelted stones at the paramilitary forces who prevented them from taking out a procession.

Groups of people who wanted to present a memorandum to the local headquarters of the United Nations observers group at Sonawar were prevented by the paramilitary forces.
