NEW DELHI: In a major departure from its policy of not granting extensions to superannuating officers, the Center has decided to retain the services of K.P.S Gill, Director-General of Police, Punjab, and B.S Bedi DGP, Jammu and Kashmir, even after their due date of retirement.

The Punjab cabinet’s recommendation for granting an extension to Gill had been pending with the Center since July. In case of Bedi, the recommendation had come from the Governor, G.C Saksena. Bedik, who was to retire on November 30, and Gill, whose date of superannuation was December 31, have been granted an extension of one year each.

According to Home Ministry sources, though no formal order is out, the decision regarding these two extensions was taken recently and it is only a matter of formality’ before an announcement is made.

K.P.S Gill belongs to the Assam cadre of the IPS while Bedi is from the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Gill had taken over as the DGP, Punjab, from Julio Ribeiro in 1988. He has not had an uninterrupted tenure on this post. During Chandra Shekhar’s Prime Minister Ship he was sent out of Punjab when Surendra Nath was appointed the Governor.

Observers feel that while an extension has been granted to Gill for the entire 1993, it is likely that he may be adjusted in some other sensitive job much before his new date of superannuation, i.e. December 31, 1993,
