JACKSON, Miss. — The Jackson County Democratic Executive Committee recently won two of the state’s seven awards during the annual Jefferson Jackson dinner in Jackson. A Moss Point teacher has received a lifetime achievement award from the Mississippi Democratic Party. Balwant Singh, a teacher at Kreole Elementary, received the award May 17 at the annual Jefferson Jackson dinner in recognition for his work in the Democratic Party, including President Bill Clinton’s reelection campaign.
“I was overwhelmed,” Singh said. “I do work hard, but I was not expecting to receive this award. A lot of good people who are dedicated were also nominated. “Singh has been a member of the Democratic Party since he came to the United States from India in 1970. He is serving as an honorary member of the steering committee for Clinton’s reelection. “When I left my country, I was fascinated by democracy,”” he said “I think we need to work hard to bring democracy to the common man. We have not totally achieved the real dream of making democracy for everyone, but we do the best job of anyone.”
The Jackson County Democratic Executive Committee also received the Chairman Award by being voted the top committee in the Fifth Congressional District, according to Melton Haris Jr., chairman of the JCDEC. The Chairman Award is presented to the county executive committee which through its organizational structure, activities and involvement exemplifies the true spirit of the Mississippi Democratic Party, Harris said.
