As he studied the custodians emptying out the garbage cans last year Kanwarjit Singh Boparai this years Associated Student Body vice president realized that Tracy High was dumping more than trash.
After an extensive study which included sifting through some samples of garbage from various receptacles on campus Boparai came up with evidence to back his claim An average 91% of the garbage in Tracy Highs dumpsters was recyclable That is approximately 3000 pounds of recyclable paper each month. Since aluminum recycling container was already set up on campus Boparai a hardworking honor student decided to look into a paper recycling program.
“Why not recycle paper instead of throwing it away?” said Boparai a senior at Tracy High.
He received support for his idea from Principal Dr. James Franco. Kip Proctor the environmental systems teacher also lent a helping hand so Boparai was on his way.
Boparai’s next step was to inform Tracy High about this new program. He brought his graphs and information to the teachers in service meeting. Boparai talked with the Custodians to make sure there was no problem in carrying out his plan. He also made an announcement at this year’s freshman elections.
“This is a job for staff and students. Everyone is becoming aware of the environment so there is positive peer pressure to recycle” said Boparai. “If no one recycles it is a waste of time. I want people to start recycling so the program works and doesn’t end after I graduate in June.”
