We do realize that our children are growing up in this free and pluralistic society, then needs and their problems are not different from those of any other immigrant community. They also face the stresses of growing up with black or white American children with a distinct identity as Sikhs of the order of Khalsa. There is growing discontentment among parents and children alike; parents feel they have lost their most prized possessions (their children) to the western world, Children fee! their parents are putting unreasonable demands on them in wanting them to abide by the traditional values of Eastern society, while their peer pressure demands freedom to experiment with all kinds of outward glamor and sensationalism,
Parents, working in highly competitive environments and most often excelling in their professions are facing the midlife crisis. Having broken away from their joint families, they lack the necessary support system, If they have been able to bring their elderly parents to this country, they have brought them to “A class prison houses” as some parents have remarked, Family stresses, along with growing problems of shattered economy and unemployment are leading to tension between married couples.
