NEW DELHI (PTI): Female literacy has a definite link with population growth and a strong negative correlation has been established in India between education levels of women and rates of fertility, reports say Sept.19.
The higher the educational level of women, the lower was the total fertility rate and the number of deaths of infants before two years per 100 live births, according to a government of India paper presented at the recent international forum meeting of “education for all” here: While the fertility rate for an illiterate woman is 5,1, fora literal who has had eight years of formal school education it is 4.5, for one who has spent nearly 10 years 4t school it is four, and finally 2.1 fora woman who has had 15years of formal education and is a graduate. Significantly, 155 of the 247 dissects were female literacy rates are lower than the national average are situated in the four states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar.
