NEW DELHI (PTI): India has conveyed to the U.S. that it was firmly opposed to signing the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in its present form as it was discriminatory or abiding by ad hoc export control regimes which restricted access to high technology under the guise of proliferation concerns, reports say Sept.18.
In discussions with Washington, India has made it clear that while it was fully committed to nuclear nonproliferation, it was not in favor of signing the NPT which attempted to also create a permanent division between the nuclear ‘haves and ‘have nots,” Prime Minister, PV .Narasimha Rao said.
On the eve of his three day official visit to Iran beginning Monday, Rao said India had made known its stand that its peace development program was linked to social and economic objectives.
“While we have developed considerable expertise in nuclear, space and missile technologies, we have ensured that these technologies do not lead to proliferation,” he’said.
India, he said, was against any discriminatory ad hoc control regimes like the missile technology control regime (MTGR) and the Nuclear Supply Group (NSG).
