INDORE (PTI): Some 3,000 families from 17 villages in Madhya Pradesh which face submergence with the construction of the controversial Narmada dam multipurpose project will be shifted to Gujarat within one year.

A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting of senior officials of the § five billion Narmada project that entails building a chain of mega and small dams across the river Narmada and its tributaries in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Giving details of the decision taken, a spokesman said 2000 families from the 17 villages facing temporary submergence including two villages Sakerja and Kakersela facing permanent submergence will be shifted within six months.

The project affected families would be served a final notice to vacate by December this year after completing land acquisition formalities and would be given six months’ time to shift under the rehabilitation program till arrival of the Monsoon next year.

The spokesman said the Gujarat government had identified 2000 Pattas for the oustees from Madhya Pradesh and procedure for the land allotment had been simplified.

He said project affected people would be given a choice to select the Patta in command area which would be given to them with clear titles.

Irrigation facilities would be provided to the oustees who have selected the plot of land in the area where these facilities did not exist, he added.
