BANGALORE: The former Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar, charged the Center with deliberately succumbing to a plot hatched by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to prevent India from becoming self-reliant and self-sufficient.

Speaking at a farmers’ rally to protest against the hike in fertilizer prices, Shekhar said the World Bank and the IMF dictated the policies of the United States, Former deputy Prime Minister, Devi Lal, recalled that when a proposal to withdraw the subsidy on fertilizer had come up during his tenure as Union Minister for agriculture, he had rejected it and increased the subsidy.

The former chief minister, R.K. Hegde, said the hike in fertilizer prices would result in a drop in production and an increase in the prices of other commodities.
