AMRITSAR: Bhai Manjit Singh, president, Akali Dal (Manjit) on Sept.11, said that he would shortly register his Akali Dal with the Election Commission; it would also contest Parliament or Assembly elections in the future. He said that the considering of elections did not mean that his party had given up its struggle for attainment of “a sovereign Sikh state,”

The list of party functionaries released by its President Manjit Singh, contained the names of six vice-presidents and four general secretaries. Besides there would be three secretaries, two joint secretaries and one secretary-general.

But for a few exceptions all those figuring in the list were close associates of the party president from the All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF).

The six vice-presidents are Dhian Singh Mand, Lakhbir Singh Dhillon, a Kisan leader, Didar Singh, Gursev Singh Harpalpur, Gurkirpal Singh and Major Jagjit Singh.

The four general secretaries were Hamminder Singh Gill, Sarabhit Singh Jammu, Balwinder Singh Khojkepur and Gurtej Singh. The latter declined the offer,

Sarabjit Singh Sohal, is the lone secretary general, while Daljit Singh Muktsar, Gurinder Singh and Balwant Singh are the three party secretaries, The two joint secretaries were Rakhpal Singh and Dilbagh Singh Bagga.

Jasbir Singh Ghuman, who succeeded Manjit Singh as chief of the AISSF, has been appointed member of the state executive. This was in accordance with the party’s constitution which said the president of the federation, which was the student wing of the party, would automatically be a member of the party executive.

Later talking to newsmen, Manjit Singh said the party would soon be re-constituted at the district level and later at the tehsil and block levels. He said for the next month, meetings would be held at the district level beginning from Gurdaspur on Sept. 16, in order to constitute the party at the district level.
