NEW DELHI: Kirpal Singh Sangat Puri, owing allegiance to the Badal group, was elected president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) here on Sept.4.

In the annual election, which was held amidst massive police presence at the Mata Sundri Gurdwara, Kirpal Singh defeated Gurcharan Singh Lajpat Nagar by 15 votes. He polled 25 votes, out of which one was declared void, while his rival polled nine votes.

Balwant Singh Lajpat Nagar was elected as general secretary of DSGMC after he defeated headmaster Sucha Singh by 10 votes. Balwant Singh polled 22 votes while Sucha Singh bagged 12 votes.

Though there are 51 members in the DSGMC, only 34 participated in the election, Sohan Singh, Bhai Gurvachan Singh and Jathedar Sher Singh were elected unopposed Lo the posts of senior vice president, junior vice-president and joint secretary respectively.

The executive members are Messrs Sucha Singh, Jaswant Singh Sethi, Manjit Singh Calcutta, Gurdip Singh Dua, Thekedar Surjan Singh and Gurcharan Singh.

The election was supervised by Rajinder Singh Monga, the outgoing president. During the election, the police blocked the road in front of the gurdwara for security reasons, The poll exercise was completed by 1 p.m. and the results were declared ina press conference conducted by Manjit Singh, president of the All India Sikh Students Federation (Manjit) and Akali Dal (Manjit).
