LONDON(PTI): Three Indian participants are placed in the third position with two points each at the end of third round matches in the Lloyd bank masters common wealth chess championship on Aug.23.
Grand Master Dibyendu Barua and National champion Pravin Thipsay drew their games in third round, while T.M.Murugan, scored an easy win against Shepley of England in a Qucen’s Indian defense game.
Grandmasters Mark Hebden (En gland), Gennedy Timoshenko (Russia), and world championship candidate GM Van Der Sterren (Netherlands) shared the lead with a tally of three points each at the end of this round.
Indian GM Dibyendu Barua was held to draw by lowly rated povlton. Barua played his favorite Philidor’s defense to obtain equality in the opening but failed to improve his position and had to be content with a draw.
National champion Pravin Thipsay escaped a defeat when he was able to defend a difficult position against M.J.Franklin.
Refusing an earlier offer for draw, Thipsay got into a bad position. However, he created a counter play sacrificing a knight and ensured a draw.
