NEW DELHI(PTI): On Aug.28, Lt. Gen. (retd) V.K.Nayyar has been appointed the new governor of the north eastern Manipurstate, which has of late been witnessing intertribal clashes,
Gen Nayyar, a highly decorated soldier retired as the western army commander in 1989, He has held prestigious command assignments in the north east including commanding the eighth mountain di His feats in Manipur included arranging the surrender of former Manipur people liberation army chief Bisheshwar.
Insurgency in the north eastern Indian state of Manipur will be tackled with a “strong hand,” the State Cabinet decided on Aug.30, according to state government sources here.
The meeting comes a day before the new governor, takes oath of office on Tuesday. Maj Gen Nayar has been general officer commanding in the area earlier and is under stood to have an in depth knowledge of insurgent movements and topography of the area.
Security and Paramilitary forces have been urged to lake necessary action to deal with militant groups, sources said.
A recent spurt in violence, in which insurgent groups like the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) are reportedly involved, has hit supplies of essential commodities which reach the state by road. Truckers have alleged that they were being “harassed” by insurgent groups on highways, Ministers also urged leaders of the Kuki and Naga tribes to prevail upon youths and ask them to eschew violence which has plagued the state for the past few months.
