CHANDIGARH: Sub Judge Jagdip Jain issued summons on Aug.1 to Mail editor in chief (Hindi edition) Kanhaiya Lal Nandan and correspondent Necrai Kumar to appear on “October 19 on a defamation complaint filed by Simranjit Singh Mann.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (Mann) president filed the defamation complaint on May 28, in which it was stated the newspaper had carried a news item “Police ki mukhbari kar rahen hain Simranjit Singh Mann” (Mann acting as a police informer) which appeared in the March 14 to 20 issue of the paper. It was the edition’s lead story.
It alleged that the news story had stated that Mann was acting as a police informer and many militants were killed on the basis of information Mann provided. The news item also reasoned that this is why Mann was not issuing statement against the state government. The massive security cover was also one of the indications in this direction Mann, whose statement was recorded on July 28, said that the story was aimed at defaming him and ruining his political career. “All has been done in connivance with the government,” he added.
