Silver Spring MD: On July 5,1993, Sikhs from Washington Metropolitan Area, served food to the homeless, at the Creative Community y for Non Violence (CCNY) in Washington, D.C. For the past three years, the Sangat from Guru Nanak Foundation of America of Silver Spring, Maryland, have been serving food and soft drinks to over 200 homeless People once every month.
There are thousands of homeless men, women, and children in Washington, D.C. Serving the homeless was a way of fulfilling Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s commandment of Vand Chakna. Serving food to these 200 homeless people is a way to show there are people in this world that want to help. The Youth were a part, by preparing the sandwiches that were riven to the homeless.
During this sewa, the sangat members received such remarks “God Bless You, We really appreciate it as you bring food for us,” from the homeless. Also, a food supply is contributed regularly to two local soup kitchens. This kitchen serves hungry people every evening.
