NEW DELHI: A driver of the Pakistani High Commission, Mohd Riaz, was apprehended by the Delhi Police while he was receiving sensitive documents from an Indian contact on July 23, according to an External Affairs Ministry statement.
In order to ward off any charge of assaulting or beating the Pakistan} official, the Delhi Police took care not only to have the official medically examined before he was handed over, but even videotaped the period he spent in police custody at the Chankayapuri police station.
The Pakistani High Commission, in a Press release said, “Riaz was subjected to severe beating at the service station after which he was forced into another car belonging to the security agencies and taken to Mahavir Udyan, where he was tied up once zgain and physically assaulted.”
The involvement of the Pakistani High Commission’s officials in espionage activities was not new and this incident confirmed that both countries continued to spy on each other for militancy plans and related information, even though such acts were totally unacceptable by norms of diplomatic conduct.
According to the Pakistani Press release, a strong protest was lodged with the Indian Government. It was pointed out that the incident was orchestrated by Indian intelligence agencies to malign Pakistan as earlier efforts to mislead the international community had failed miserably.
