AMRITSAR (PTI): The former head priest of the Sikh temporal and spiritual seat of “Akal Takht™ at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Giani Kirpal Singh, died of heart failure here July 26. He was 75.

He leaves behind his widow, a daughter and son, Giani Kirpal Singh complained of uneasiness’ and severe pain in the chest in the morning and was admitted to a nursing home. He later suffered a massive heart attack and died.

The former head priest was a heart patient and was admitted to the Guru Ram Das hospital in the beginning of this month. He was discharged from the hospital only three days before that,

Giani Kirpal Singh who was head priest during the period of operation Blue Star in 1984, left his post at the Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), top management body of Sikh temples, in December 1986 under pressure from the militants who had appointed the detained Jasbir Singh rode as parallel head priest and made Gurdev Singh Kaonke as acting head priest at a Sarbat Khalsa meet in January 1986.
