NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh government has stated that the construction activities at the shilanyas site near the disputed Ramjanm a bhoomi-Babri Masjid complex was brought to a complete halt on July 26 in deference to the earlier orders of the Supreme Court and the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court.

The statement was contained in an affidavit filed in the supreme court recently by Prabhati Kumar, principal secretary to the state government in the home departments, in compliance with a direction issued by the court. Three petitions being heard in the court have sought initiation of contempt proceedings against the state government, Chief Minister Kalyan Singh and the Vishwa Hindu Parisad for violating the order of the apex court dated Nov.15,1991 and that of the high court dated July 15 restraining structure on the 2.77 acres of land acquired near the disputed shrines,

The petitions are being heard by a two-judge bench comprising Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah and Justice G.N. Ray. After  the affidavit, the judges adjourned the hearing of the case till Aug.4 and directed the petitioners to file their Counters to the affidavit by Aug.3.

Taking advantage of the changed atmosphere the state government had been making all efforts to ensure that the religious leaders were brought together to persuade their followers and the kar sevaks to adhere to the Orders of the apex court and the high Court,” it was added in the affidavit.

Denying the allegations of erecting any permanent structure at the shilanyas Site, it was submitted in the affidavit that only a platform had been laid at the shilanyas site the platform is not build on the any foundation and is on the other hand laid on leveled ground the affidavit said.
