JAIPUR (PTI): India’s former Federal energy minister and a senior Janata Dal (S) leader, Kalyan Singh Kalvi, died of a massive heart attack in Bombay July 27.

Kalvi, 58, was a minister in the Chandra Shekhar government during 1990-91,

The Rajasthan government had rushed a plane to bring his body to Jodhpur, in Rajasthan state, a state government spokesman said here.

He was cremated Tuesday at his native village Kalvi in Nagaur district of the state.

Kalvi was first elected a member of the Rajasthan legislative assembly from Makrana constituency in 1978 as a Janata Party candidate.

He was a cabinet minister for agriculture, animal husbandry and dairy from 1978 to 1980 in the state government.

Rajasthan chief minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and assembly speaker H.S. Bhabhra, have condoled Kalvi’s death.

They described him as a leader of the farmers and said Kalvi played a vital role as a legislator.

The Janata Dal (S) said the passing away of Kalvi was an irreparable loss to the country in general and to the party in particular. At a condolence meeting in New Delhi, several party leaders, including former deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal described Kalvi as a veteran leader devoted to the cause of rural uplift.
