NEW DELHI (PTI) The new deputy minister for education and culture, Ms. Selja, said her first priority would be literacy since most of India’s problems are basically related to it. “Literacy, especially among women, is the need of the hour,”’ the 29-year old minister in premier Narasimha Rao’s ministry said after assuming charge of her office, She also stressed the importance of vocational education in view of the massive unemployment problem.
Regarding culture, the minister referred to its integrating role among different sections not only within the country but internationally as well.
Selja met senior officials of her ministry and began acquainting herself with the various aspects of its working.
Meanwhile, Mrs Sukhbans Kaur, who was appointed as the minister of state for tourism, also assumed charge of her office and met senior officials of the department. The ministry of civil aviation and tourism, headed by Madhavrao Scindia, will now have two ministers of state.
M.O.H. Farooq, the minister of state for civil aviation and tourism so far, will now look after civil aviation, while Sukhbans Kaur takes over tourism from him.
