CALCUTTA: The West Bengal government on May 19 sent a strong protest note to the Punjab government with a copy to Union home ministry regarding the gunning down of a Sikh couple allegedly by a Punjab police team on Monday.
The chief secretary, N.Krishnamuni, in a note to his Punjab counterpart narrated the incident in details and sought clarification whether the unidentified gunmen who raided the house of the couple were from Punjab police.
Krishnamurti mentioned that if it was a Punjab police team their action was deplorable because they did not inform the West Bengal government.
Relations between the state government and Punjab Police have not been at the cordial best for a while.
On the day of the gunning itself, the sources in the local police had indicated that the involvement of Punjab Police in the murders could not be ruled out the sources added that if the involvement was proved, it would further worsen the relations between the two.
