NEW DELHI: The Indian government told the supreme court on Feb.15 that Hindus were free to view and pray at the makeshift temple raised by fundamentalists after destroying the Babri masjid at Ayodhya, The government’s stand was conveyed by attorney general Milon Banerjec in response to the court’s question whether the recently issued law had the effect of nullifying all court orders including the Allahbad high court order permitting Hindus to pray at the site where earlier the Babri masjid stood. The petitions were filed by the U.P. Muslim Wakf Board joking after Muslim property affairs seeking directions by the court that Muslims should be permitted to perform namaz at the disputed site if Hindus were to be allowed to have “darshan” of the place. Banerjec told the court that since “darshan” was being performed before the enactment of the law, this practice will continue, the supreme court issued no directions about whether namaz at the site would also be permitted to Muslims.
