JALANDHAR: The CPI general secretary Indrajit Gupta said peace in Punjab could not be restored as long as the struggle for power continued without naming the Congress (I) and Akalis. He said the Punjab problem was a result of the power struggle between these two political parties.
The CPI leader made this observation while addressing a Shaheed Parivar Fund function organized by the Hind Simachar group of newspapers here. An assistance of Rs 5 lakh was given to 50 families affected by militancy on the occasion.
Referring to his talks with the Prime Minister P.V.Narasimha Raoin New Delhi on Junc6Gupta said the Union Government was not sincere in finding a solution to the problem. He asked what purpose the February polls in Punjab served as a large number of people did not take part in them. He said the elections were held in Punjab by the Congress (I) governmental the center to win Lok Sabha seats to make its position a little more secure Now the Prime Minister and the Home Minister were talking of holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir in October with the same objective Gupta said the Punjab problem was not a law and order problem and there was no easy solution to it. “No miracle is possible in Punjab” he added
