NEW DELHI: Around a hundred civil liberties activists staged a march on Friday from India Gate to the Boat Club again extending the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA).

Led by Citizens for Democracy 16 civil rights groups urged the President to “influence the Central Government to ensure the lapse of TADA and to protect the civil liberties of the people.”

Unless it is revised by a Presidential order or an act of Parliament TADA will lapse on May 24.

“TADA is probably the blackest of all the black laws prevailing in the country today. It violates the basic civil liberties o people putting them entirely the mercy of the security the civil rights groups stated here.

“Ordinary laws such as the Indian Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure confer ample powers on the police to deal effectively with terrorism.

“Laws like TADA are not necessary for the maintenance of law and order even in terrorist-affected areas. They are however made applicable to the whole country.

“Experience of the last several years has shown that laws like TADA do not help in eliminating terrorism and private violence the civil rights groups stated.
