Vancouver: “By creating the Khalsa on the Baisakhi day in 1699 Guru Gobind Singh eliminated the distinctions of caste creed and religion and transformed the down trodden neglected and oppressed people into a valiant fearless and self-sacrificing community.” Bhai Avtar Singh Sandhu General Secretary Khalsa Diwan Society Vancouver said this while addressing a house full Diwan (congregation) held on Monday the 13th April to solemnize the Baisakhi day. “The baptization of the Sikhs with Amrit (Nectar) on Baisakhi day the 13th April 1699 heralded a new era in Indian history” Avtar Singh said. President Kundan Singh Sajjan also spoke about the significance of the day and urged the congregation to follow the path of love service and self-sacrifice as shown by Guru Gobind Singh. Prominent Kirtan Jathas of Bhai Amar Singh Hoshiarpur Bhai Hargun Singh Bhai Gurmukh Singh and Giani Jagdish Singh Kenya sang the holy Gurbani Kirtan. Bhai Sardool Singh Bagi a prominent Sikh scholar from Bombay also stressed upon preaching the universal Sikh tenets of Fatherhood of God brotherhood of men and service to mankind.
