SRINAGAR: At least three persons were injured one of them critically when paramilitary forces opened fire on demonstrators protesting against the suspected death of Ikhwanul Muslimeen militant Javed Ahmed Shala in the custody of security forces. The police however said that he had escaped from custody soon after his arrest.
Shala who was released from jail in exchange for K. Duraiswamy executive director of the Indian Oil Corporation fast August was re-arrested from hideout in Bemina On the out skins of Srinagar last Tuesday The authorities did not confirm his arrest till ate that evening.
Reports of his death circulated in the city leading to protest demonstrations by the people Processions were taken out in different pans of Srinagar. The demonstrators were demanding that Shala be brought on television “The JKLF supporters among the demonstrators raised slogans demanding the release of the organizations chairman Amanullah Khan who was arrested in Rawalpindi.
According to the police the paramilitary forces opened fire on a procession near Zainakadal Three persons were injured. One of them Irshad Ahmed was said to be in critical condition.
