PATNA (PTI) For the eastern Indian state of bihar, gruesome ‘massacres and carnages have become a part of life, giving the state the dubious distinction of witnessing 83 such incidents since 1976claiming over 600 lives, according to official sources. While the highest number of 52 killings was witnessed at delelchak-baghaura in 1987, the next in line was the recent Bara ‘Camage which took toll of 37 lives. In other major attacks 19 persons were killed at non hi nagwa in 1988 and 17others were done to death at parasdiha in 1986. Besides 14 persons each were murdered at belchi in 1977, pipra in 1980, tiskhora, malwaria and deo-shahiara — all in 1991 A study of the list of massacres prepared by the crime investigation department reveals that socio-economic factors with caste overtones was a dominant factor behind these mass killings.
