CHANDIGARH: Khalistan Liberation Force “area commander” Manjit Singh and eight other militants were among 31 persons killed in Punjab during one day.

In an encounter security forces shot dead a militant, identified as Jaswinder Singh, alias Bitu of the Babbar Khalsa near Bakshiwal village in Patiala district last night, are port from Patiala quoting district police chief S.K. Sharma said.

The encounter ensued when the militant and his accomplices were challenged while trying to plant a bomb on the track near the village last night.

An AK-47 rifle along with two magazines and a huge quantity of ammunition were recovered from the scene of the encounter.

The SSP corrected his earlier statement that the dead militant was identified as Amrik Singh Kauli ,chief of the Babbar Khalsa. He said it was a case of mistaken identity as Jaswinder Singh and Kauli resembled each other.

Security forces gunned down Manjit Singh, KLF “area commander”, who was wanted in more than 50 killings, and his accomplice, identified as Sucha Singh, near Varpal village in Majitha police district last night. One mouser, one 315-bore rifle and some rounds of ammunition were recovered from the stain militants.

In another encounter, security forces shot dead four militants near Kanganwal village in Sangrur district early this morning, A Springfield rifle, A.12-bore gun were recovered from the killings militants.

Earlier, the gang shot dead Harbans Kaur, wife of Dr Mahatma Singh, in her house at Ahmedgash in the district.

A militant was shot dead by security forces near Chawla village in Ferozepur district last night. A double-barreled gun and some rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.

In another encounter in the same district, a militant was shot dead by security forces near Kohala village last night. An AK-47 rifle along with a magazine, eight rockets to plastic best and a walkie talkie set were recovered from the scene of the encounter.

Militants shot dead former Capt. Hiarbans Singh and former Subedar Ram Murti, president and secretary, respectively, of the ex-servicemen District Association, at Sarabha Nagar in Ludhiana district today.

Militants entered the house of sarpanch Balraj Singh at Kot village in Jalandhar district and opened fire, killing him and his two relatives, Gurpreet Singh and Amarjit Singh, last night.
