NEW DELHI: The Swedish government has asked Bofors to come clean on the Howitzer gun deal with India and the allegations of commissions paid to Indian leaders and officials including the late Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi the visiting Swedish Minister for International Development cooperation and Human Rights Issues, Mr Alf Svensson, said on Friday,
In a brief conversation with some correspondents just before he left for Stockholm after a three-day visit to India, Mr, Svensson said that after the recent revelations by the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, a few ministers in the new Christian Democrat government in Sweden spoke to senior Bofors officials and asked them 0 “reveal what they knew” about the allegations.
He expressed the hope that Bofors will put every paper on the table to clear all doubts and dispel suspicious”, Only Bofors can tell the truth and nothing but the truth, he declared.
Mr Svensson asserted that his government will try its best to as Certain the truth about the Bofors: affair within the legal framework. He hoped that this controversy will not affect ties between India and Sweden both of which have now governments, It will be t00 bad if we fern around on this issue, he said. During his visit Mr Svensson who is also the Deputy foreign Minister had discussions with the External Affairs Minister, Mr. Madhaysinh Solanki and the Environment Minister Mr. Kamalnath, He visited several projects in Rajasthan relating to drinking water and education which are financed by Swedish aid of which he is in charge.
