LUDHITANA: He writes and sings Songs for children and his tender songs have won the hearts of a large and ever growing following of both old and ‘young. Belonging to village Neelon located on the outskirts of Ludhiana, Kamaljit Works as. Clerk in the telephones department at Ludhiana; he spends every bit of his spare time singing for children in villages and towns.
Son of an art teacher and a poet late Sardar Kulwant Singh, was a teacher in the village school. Kamaljit says about his father, “he always inspired. But living in a village and’ being one of a large family with & meagre income, I could not be trained in music.
It is indeed a treat to watch Neelon perform with his band of young ones, singing and dancing out numbers like Iriye bhambiriya, Ni kehrha ghar tera or Meri mummy mere layi frock lai ke aayi aa.
He has a talent for mimicry which he exploits well in his songs singing in the voice of a little child, talking like an old woman or going back to his own natural voice. His sounds effects too are enchanting he renders the meowing of a Cat or the ringing of a telephone so well. Not only has he brought lovely Original songs in Punjabi he has also changed the trend by writing loving songs about lite girls and giving them tender lullabies. The rural Punjab culture ignores and neglects the girl child as an unwritten rule.
Neelon says, “When my niece Sonu was bor, there was no happiness at home because a family was looking forward to a male child. I was hurt that she was even denied lullabies and I started writing especially for her.”
His Lori to her is a poignant statement on the lot of little girls “Bhauti nahi je dendi maaye te de dendi thhorian, Kithe gayian maan ne saade hisse dian lorian.”
He is two cassettes old and a popular children’s star on television. Neelon wants to go on working with children, this young man is yet to marry and have his own children who will grow up singing their papa’s songs.
