EDMONTON: Hundreds of Sikhs and Muslims carrying placards denounced India over its “persecution” of Sikhs and the recent massacre of thousands of Muslim by Hindus. The demonstrations were angry with the Canadian PM for attending an “India day” event organized by a Hindu Cultural Society on Feb.8, The Sikh Federation of Edmonton spokesman, Jasbeer Singh, said that Klein was ill-advised to attend the celebration sponsored by Council of Indian Societies Edmonton, which was a fanatical Hindu body. Thousands of Sikhs have been killed in India since the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 bit not a single person has been prosecuted for the killings. He said, “We are telling Canadians coming to participate in celebrations of democracy in India that there is no democracy. Local Muslim leader Imam Youssef Chebli said India was “hypocrisy, not a democracy. We are here to stand up for our freedom of worship.” The President of the Pakistan Canadian Association of Edmonton, called on Canada to play a more active role in restoring peace in India.
