New Delhi: The Supreme Court case relating to federal job quotas for the backward classes first {introduced by the national front government in 1990 and later modified by the present regime has generated varied comments from the media here.
The high court resumed its hearing on the controversial issue earlier this week after a break of nearly two months. This was despite the government’s failure to specify the economic criteria for job quotas in its modified package introduced on October first. The hearings were postponed after the government pleaded for more time in order to be able to make out a list of socially and educationally backward classes that would qualify for reservation
Praising the Supreme Court for rejecting the government petition for a further adjournment of the hearings on the Mandal issue the “Indian Express” in an editorial wrote “by once again failing to specify the economic criteria for the job reservations the Rao government is creating the impression that it is in no hurry o implement the package.”
