AHMEDABAD: Police and Para military forces were patrolling the sensitive areas of Dariapur and Kalupur in the walled city of this commercial hub of the western Indian state of Gujarat where an indefinite curfew has been imposed since Wednesday afternoon following group clashes.

Four persons were killed in police firing and over a dozen others injured in the clashes that broke out over the issue of kite flying on the “Makar Sankranti” harvest festival Wednesday.

Police resorted to firing after bursting of tear gas shells proved futile in controlling the mobs. Police fired 267 rounds and burst 100 teargas shells to curb the violence which continued in the walled city areas till late Wednesday. At least a dozen houses and shops were set afire by miscreants by throwing burning rags and petrol bombs.

The situation in the riot-hit areas was under control Thursday morning but still “tense”. At least 30people were injured in incidents of stabbing and stone-throwing.
