CHANDIGARH: The Punjab administration has sought 647 more companies of security forces for maintenance of law and order for the election to be held next month.
Delhi has reportedly given green signal for 242 companies while Punjab has suggested that 405 more companies are required immediately. This means Punjab’s requirement is higher by 200 companies in this election as Compared to the abortive June 1991 election. The police circles main is in that more forces are required because unlike in June 1991 congress (I) is also contesting this time. With that there will be more candidates they will require gunmen to protect them. In addition the staff on election daily will need greater amount of security cover this time of The additional security forces are being requisitioned even when a massive presence of the army has already been arranged Ac Cording to intelligence agencies the number of sensitive” polling booths in Punjab will be 4469 out of a total of 9202 booths.
