Former East German Jeader Erich Honecker will live out his final days in comparative luxury in Chile, where his family is staying in a mountain villa. Since he wasn’t convicted of anything in Germany before his trial was stopped because of his ill health, he gets a German state pension. His medical care is free in Chile, and he reportedly has received a gift equivalent to about $185,000 from Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat. That payment is in return for East Germany’s long support of the PLO.
