ROPAR: An extortionist, who was later identified as an Army soldier, Faqir Singh, was killed near Rangian village under Morinda police station in an encounter with the police on Jan.18.

According to the police, the deceased barged into the house of a pelorpump union after setting off the telephone wires and demanded huge money from his son, Raman Kumar.

On being refused, he forced the latter on pistol point to drive him to Rangian village on a scooter lying in the house.

Just when the two drove off the members of the family raised an aan and officials of a bank situated nearby informed the police.

When the police gave the two a chase, the Army soldier jumped off the scooter and ran into a Sugarcane field. In the meantime, the

Deputy Superintendent of the police had reached the spot with forces. In the ensuing exchange of fire, the extortionist was killed.

From the identity card recovered from his pocket, the deceased was identified as Faqir Singh, serving 133, Field Regiment. He was on leave from Nov.21, 1992 to Jan.22, 1993.
