NEW DELHI(PTI): Agricultural experts are predicting a serious food shortage in India in the next five to 10 years if the country does not adopt new strategies to keep its cereal production in pace with the spiraling population growth. The country’s current level of food production is just about balancing the rising population, but if it does not keep pace with the latter in the coming years, there can be a serious food shortage, warned Prof.S.K.Sinha, director of the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (LART), New Delhi.

Already the situation is grim in Africa and South America which are facing a severe food crisis as their population growth is higher than that of cereal production. Countries in these regions are buying cereals from other countries to meet their food requirements,

Should India join their band in the coming years, availability of food from other countries will not be assured, with African and South American countries already scouring the markets to meet their food shortages, Prof Sinha warned.
