JALANDHAR: Umrao Singh, Panchayat Minister (Congress), his cousin Kuldeep Singh Wadala (Akali Dal Badal) and Justice Ajit Singh Bains(Akali Dal Mann) are among the 49 candidates who filed their nomination papers for contesting the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat which goes to the polls on May 19.

Harbhajan Lakha(BSPK), Surjit Singh Minhas (Akali Dal-L),Sathi Roop Lal and Baldev Singh bhatti (JDB) and Devi Dass Nahar (BSPA) also filed their nomination papers.

The total number of the papers submitted was 72. Some candidates filed more than one paper.

As the BJP has not yet decided on the name of the candidate four persons namely Balramji Das Tandon, Jugal Mahajan, Sat Pal Gosain and Krishen Lal Dhall submitted their papers on behalf of the party.

All prominent candidates were accompanied by a large number of slogan raising supporters. Among those who were present in the dis district courts were Parkash Singh Badal, Gurcharan Singh Tohra and Simranjit Singh Mann, Manjit Singh (Akali Manjit) and ministers and MLAs.

A piquant situation arose when Wadala and Umrao Singh who are first cousins name face to face outside the gate of the courts. The supporters of both of them raised slogans in support of each other.

The Akali Dal led by Manjit Singh has extended his party’s support to Wadala. He also accompanied Badal to the courts. The Punjab Janata Morcha will also support Wadala.

Talking to newsmen in the district courts, Badal appealed to Mann and others to extend support to Wadala, who had been chosen because he was popular among the masses in the constituency. Badal was confident that a consensus on the candidature of Wadala would emerge as the talks were still going on.

Meanwhile, S.K.Sharma, SSP, told newsmen that each candidate had been provided 18 policemen for security. He rejected the request of Kak Joginder Singh Dhartipad who wanted withdrawal of his security.
