MANAMA, BAHRAIN: Saudi Arabia confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon March 22, officially ending the holy month of Ramadan and heralding a three-day holiday for most of the world’s billion Muslims.

Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates quickly followed the Sandi lead, declaring Tuesday the first day of the three-day Eid el Fitr feast. Most Arab countries were expected to do the same. Persian Iran, which challenges Saudi Arabia’s leadership role in the Muslim world, has announced its nation would continue its Ramadan davntodusk fasting and start the feast on Wednesday.
