BONN,(PTI): As many as 1,170 Indian nationals are reported to have registered themselves for “political asylum” in Germany between January and February.

According to information released by the German interior ministry here, 584 Indians managed to smuggle themselves through various channels and entered Germany illegally asking for asylum. In February the number of Indians entering the country illegally rose to 586, the ministry said.

German interior minister, Rudolf Seiters said, in the first two months of this year alone 74,350 asylum seekers entered Germany against 62,338 in the same period last year. The capacity to absorb the flood of people coming to Germany for “political asylum” was coming to an end, he added.

According to information, most asylum seekers were coming present from Romania followed by Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey and the former Soviet Union. Also 629 Chinese nationals came to

Germany in February for “political asylum” against 951 a month ago.
