Berkeley: Punjabi will be taught as one of the languages at the University of Berkeley California, in the Department of South and South Asian Studies. The University proposes to start teaching Punjabi in the Gurmukhi script from the fall semesters of 1993. This has been hailed as a step forward in recognition of the language spoken by almost all of the population of Northern India.
