CHANDIGARH: Twenty six persons including a former member of legislative assembly and Congress I committee (rural) President Jagroop Singh Gill, his two security men, and a constable, were killed in the past week in Punjab reports said here.

Two persons were injured and one was arrested after an encounter with security forces during the period, the reports said.

Gunmen shot dead two persons outside Gandhi ground gate on the Taylor Road in Amnitsar.

They ambushed the former MLA’s car and killed him and his two security guards, Gurdey Singh and Sarabjit Singh, near Jagraon about 42 km from Ludhiana.

The car driver, who was seriously wounded, was admitted into a hospital.

Gill was returning to his village Gagra when the incident occurred, the reports said.

Jagraon town observed complete hartal in protest against the killings. Mr. Gill was elected to the state Vidhan Sahba from Jagraon in 1980.

Harjit Singh alias Rana was arrested following an “encounter” with security forces near village Sunar Khurd in Jalandhar district. His accomplice, however, escaped.

One AK47 rifle, cartridges and some empties of different bores were seized from him. Gunmen shot dead constable Harbans Singh near village Barsal Chack in Batala police district. The deceased, posted in Gurdaspur, was going home when attacked.

Shopkeeper Ashok Kumar was gunned down while he was returning home in the Batala police district.

In yet another incident in the same district, village Sarpanch Harwana Singh was shot outside a Gurdwara in village Panjwar.
